Don’t get me wrong! I would love the chance to go away to one of these beautiful places and conduct research and conservation in tropical places…but I can’t afford it! Many of these places charge WAY too much and for WHAT? Some research experience. What is your return on investment? Does this really help you in gaining experience for in your career?

There are 2 Problems With Researching Abroad

1) You can’t get too much experience in 2 weeks of learning. It doesn’t make sense. How much experience can you get in 2 weeks. You would have to make multiple trips to get any worth towards experience for your career; and,

2) You end up paying a lot of money to acquire experience that may or may not be worth it for your career. If you are paying around $2000/trip (including travel expenses) and you have to do more than 1 trip to get worth while experience, then you will be spending at least $4000. Now that is a lot of money for someone who is searching for a job.

I’m not saying that all of these research abroad trips are junk. I just want to make sure that you are getting your money’s worth to pursue a career of your dreams.
