Sea Surface Temperature Rise

Coral bleaching is caused by high sea surface temperatures and temperatures aren't going down any time soon.

What Is The Problem

Just like global temperatures, Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) are on the rise, posing a number of problems. Many marine organisms are affected by warmer waters, such as coral reefs, sensitive habitats responsible for harbouring high biodiversity of fish and invertebrates (crabs, shrimp, etc.). Corals lose vital dinoflagellates (tiny organisms that live in corals and are responsible for absorbing light from the sun and give off biproducts for the corals to use as food) in high temperatures and are unable to harness the biproducts of light absorption. Long periods without dinoflagellates will cause the corals to lose their colour, hence the bleaching look, and the coral will eventually die off.

Why Is This Problem Happening

SST are rising because global temperatures are rising due to increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

Who Is Responsible For The Issue

We are all indirectly responsible for SST rise because our actions have caused global temperature rise.

How Long Has This Been An Issue

SSTs have been measured since 1963, but concern about rising temperatures began around 2000, when climate change issues also became popular knowledge.

How Do We Solve It

Nothing can be done to directly stop water temperatures from rising; however, reducing your carbon footprint by driving less, increasing your energy efficiency at home, and eating more organically grown food.
