Social Media create new Ocean Leaders and increase the reach people have on their network.

There are only a handful of Ocean Leaders in the world today that are very well known including the Cousteau Family and Dr. Sylvia Earle. They dedicate their lives to save an Ocean through raising awareness by education using various media technologies. The technologies used to be limited to radio and television, which would force these Ocean Leaders to travel to various parts of the world to speak in person to people of all ages and background

The excessive travelling would restrict the amount of people that could become Ocean Leaders due to the loads of money it would take to travel to speak to people and document Ocean species and habitats. It didn’t mean that there weren’t Ocean Leaders out there doing their thing, it just meant that their reach was not as large. But Things Have Changed!

The Dawn of Social Media

Social Media allows anyone to get in the Ocean Conservation game and become a leader for the Oceans. Scientists, marketers, students, and everyone else can make people aware of what is happening in the Ocean at any time.

For instance, the Gulf of Mexico blow out that caused 100s of millions of barrels of oil to be spilled, destroying habitats and species for years to come was well covered by the mainstream media; however, better coverage was from all the Ocean Leaders that had a Twitter, Facebook, and/or Linkedin account. Social media allowed local people to take pictures and videos of the spills impacts on the beach and speak to everyone through web cams about how the spill has impacted their lives. Social media drew international attention to the Gulf of Mexico Spill.

Another powerful example is Dr. Sylvia Earle’s TED Talk on Ocean Conservation. Sylvia earned a $100,000 prize from TED for her achievements and dedication to conserving the oceans. The TED prize allows recipients to make one actionable wish. In her speech, Dr. Earle wished for all of us to protect the Ocean. A task that can be considered a little difficult given the size of the Oceans and the complexities of their problems. Regardless, Sylvia made her wish…and it resulted in 19 million dollars in funding after Dr. Earle’s TED Talk. How could that have happened through just one speech?

The Power of the Social Media Reach Around the World

TED Talks are viewed by millions of people everyday. Each video has the option of being shared on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media sites (Digg and StumbleUpon) as well as blog sites. The Sylvia Earle site went viral reaching hundreds of thousands of people around the world on the TED site and YouTube, which resulted in the huge amount of funding. Of course, the speech was amazing and Sylvia’s speech reflected a scientist, explorer, and human being wanting to save our most prized resource…in other words, Sylvia’s passion came through like a shining light.

You must realize that using social media to spread your message about the Ocean is not just for explorers, current Ocean Leaders, and the mainstream media…it’s for YOU and the new Ocean Leaders. You can use social media to spread your message to millions of people across various platforms with very little money invested (if any at all). Shark fin soup is being banned in many cities around North America mostly because the power of social media has been showing people videos and pictures of how sharks are brutally tortured and left to die by shark fin fishermen.

People other then the current Ocean Leaders are able to help the Ocean at a higher magnitude than any current Ocean Leader. You have the power to influence your network and make people aware of the Ocean issues so that we can find a solution in stages.
