Protection of Sharks Increases in 2010

Celine Cousteau tweeted this article posted on BBC regarding the increased measures to protect sharks, especially from finning. The article states that the United States and the European Union governments took action towards protection sharks. Although the laws were not exactly what environmental advocates wanted, the fact that the governments moved to add protection to sharks at all in the laws is a great, NO, GIANT leap in the proper direction. The laws show progress in the fight of advocates, scientists, communities, and individuals are making in gaining the attention of policy and law makers.

Earlier this week I wrote about how changing the images of sharks from ferocious predators to important animals for the ecosystem will help protect the animals. Movies such as Sharkwater and people such as Terry Lilley work hard to show their audiences the gentle nature of the group of fish. What do you think?

  • I agree that this is a great start. I was thrilled to see the U.S. doing something about shark conservation. There’s still a lot to be done, but it’s great to see some action being taken!
