I met this week’s guest and his wife during a conference on Ocean Science Communication. On a side note, it was one of the best conferences I’ve ever been to as each session was structure to incorporate the opinions and expertise of the audience. I love it! I loved the people I met and still stay in touch with many of them today.
Getting back to this week’s guest. Alex Tilley and his wife Juliana Lopez Angarita co-founded a non-profit organization called Talking Oceans that focuses on science and conservation of tropical ecosystems. They carry out research in coastal communities throughout Central and South America.
Alex and Juliana told me all about their organization and I was captivated by the work they were doing. When I got the idea to start a podcast for Speak Up For Blue, I added them to the guest list because I wanted to share the work they were doing with my audience.
Alex was kind enough to chat with me about Talking Oceans all the way from Bogeta, Columbia (Skype is amazing!). We discussed the projects they were conducting and how they worked with coastal communities in Central America. We even discussed a new project on which Alex was about to embark in Myanmar to explore coastal waters that have never been explored. I tried to convince to name a newly discovered species after himself if he came across one.
