Emily Cunningham's ocean career proves you don't need a science degree to make a real difference for the ocean. She started with unpaid turtle patrols in Sri Lanka, a volunteer stint with the Sea Watch Foundation, and unpaid time at the North Wales Wildlife Trust. No PhD, no glamorous first job, just showing up for local, grassroots work. She was also the first person in her family to attend university, studying marine biology at Bangor University on a merit scholarship.
From there, her career built steadily rather than starting at the top. She spent time as Marine Programme Coordinator for the Ascension Island Government, worked across roles at the Wildlife Trusts, and went on to lead the Local Government Association's Coastal Special Interest Group, representing 57 coastal councils across the UK. She co-founded #Motion4TheOcean, an initiative that pushed more than 30 UK local governments to formally commit to ocean recovery. Today, she leads a global conservation initiative for WWF, and in January 2025 she received an MBE in the King's New Year Honors list for her services to marine conservation and coastal communities.
Emily says the best part of her work is knowing she's changed the mind of a politician or influenced a policy for the better, and she puts it simply: your voice matters right now, whether you're 10 years old or 70 years old. Her debut book, "Our Ocean to Save," publishes October 29, 2026.
