Kelp Forest Restoration Can't Keep Up With Climate Loss

Kelp forest restoration gets treated as one of the ocean's feel-good climate wins, the kind of thing you can donate to and point at as proof of progress. A new essay in PLOS Biology says the math doesn't support that framing. Climate-driven kelp losses are running 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than restoration can currently offset, and the gap is widening.

The essay, authored by Karen Filbee-Dexter, Albert Pessarrodona, Kira A. Krumhansl, and Thomas Wernberg, projects that 25 million hectares of wild kelp forest will disappear globally by 2050. Since 1958, the total verified area of kelp restored worldwide is about 4,200 hectares, meaning the projected 2050 loss is roughly 6,000 times larger than everything restoration has managed to rebuild to date. The authors aren't arguing against restoration itself, they're arguing against treating it as a genuine climate lever.

Their real recommendation: protecting the kelp forests still standing is the cheaper, more effective option, and restoration still matters for biodiversity and coastal resilience, just not as a substitute for cutting emissions. If kelp forests keep tipping from carbon sinks toward carbon sources as the ocean warms, that's a double hit, less natural buffering of the carbon we're already emitting, at the same time as a new source of it.
