North Atlantic right whale population data has moved one direction for over a decade: down. This year, for the first time in a while, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans reports that decline appears to have halted. DFO estimates the population at roughly 384 whales, including about 70 breeding females. Canadian waters logged over 680 visual whale detections and more than 2,000 acoustic detections this season, and the winter calving grounds off the southeastern US saw 23 calves born, the highest count since 2009, independently confirmed by NOAA Fisheries. DFO scientist Brett Gilchrist summed up the season plainly: "The decline seems to have been halted," calling it "a very good calving year."
The margin for error stays thin. Only about 70 breeding females remain, and losing even one more would set the population back.
