Wounded corals heal faster when a tiny, easy-to-overlook fish is living inside them. That's the headline finding from a new study out of the University of Georgia: the yellowtail dascyllus damselfish (Dascyllus flavicaudus), a small reef fish that spends its entire life inside a single coral colony, appears to actively help that coral recover after physical damage. Researcher Hayden Vega, working in Craig Osenberg's lab, published the findings in the journal Biology Letters this past July, and it's a rare bit of good news in a news cycle full of bleaching and reef decline headlines.
The experiment itself was simple: researchers created wounds on coral colonies, some small and some large, then compared healing between colonies with resident damselfish and colonies without. Corals with damselfish present healed noticeably faster, and their newly regrown tissue also worked better, showing improved photosynthetic efficiency in the coral's algae partners. The effect was strongest on the biggest wounds, exactly when the coral needed the most help. Researchers believe the fish create better conditions for healing, likely through some combination of fish waste fertilizing the coral's algae with nitrogen, water flow and oxygen stirred up by the fish's movement, and the fish deterring algae or predators from the vulnerable, healing tissue.
Scientists already knew coral-dwelling damselfish could help their host corals resist heat stress and bleaching. This is the first time anyone has shown they help with physical wound healing too, and it's a reminder that reef resilience isn't only about what humans do or don't do to protect reefs.
