A new perspective paper led by Gavin Stark of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research lays out several guiding principles for actively rewilding ocean ecosystems: reintroducing top predators, reconnecting migration routes between reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and deep-sea habitats, tackling pollution and invasive species directly, and keeping local communities part of the process rather than fenced out of it. Off Raja Ampat, Indonesia, more than 60 endangered leopard sharks raised from eggs in aquarium care have been released into protected waters since 2024 to help rebuild the reef's predator population, years of hands-on work layered on top of legal protection, not a replacement for it.
