Trump renames Lake Ontario "Lake America," and he did it using a loophole. Renaming a US body of water is normally supposed to go through the US Board on Geographic Names: a free-to-file process involving historical review and public input that typically takes six months to a year. Trump's August 27, 2026 executive order skipped all of that, directing the Interior Department and the Board to simply update the US government's own naming records, done within days by presidential signature alone. It's the same loophole Trump used to rename the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" back in January 2025, and it works exactly the same way here: fast, on paper, and limited entirely to how the US government refers to the lake.
That last part matters, because the loophole only reaches so far. Lake Ontario is a treaty-bound boundary water that Canada co-owns, one of the largest freshwater reservoirs on the planet, and Canada has already rejected the new name outright. There's also a wrinkle the executive order doesn't touch: the Canadian province of Ontario was named after the lake, not the other way around, and "Ontario" itself traces back to an Indigenous word generally translated as "beautiful" or "sparkling water," a naming history no signature can undo.
The Gulf of America precedent shows exactly how messy this gets. The UK declined to recognize the new Gulf name, China called it a bullying move, and Mexico sued Google over its map labeling, winning a court ruling that has zero power over what Google shows US users. National polling found 71% of Americans opposed the Gulf rename, and even in Florida, a state that borders the Gulf directly, 58% of voters opposed it too. Major outlets split down predictable lines, with the AP, New York Times, and Washington Post sticking with the old names while Fox News and Axios adopted the new ones. Google Maps has already updated to show "Lake America" for US users while Canadian users still see Lake Ontario, the same country-by-country approach it uses for the Gulf. Whatever you call it, the trade dispute behind this, tariffs, cross-border language rules, and a collapsed negotiation, isn't going away just because the lake got a new name on paper.
