Inside Ocean Conservancy's Fight to Make Washing Machine Filters the Law

Ocean Conservancy's "Not Safe for Wash" campaign is built around a simple premise: the fix for washing machine microfiber pollution already exists, so the fight isn't about inventing new technology, it's about forcing a nearly two-decade-old idea into law. Its own May 2026 poll of 1,010 Americans found concern about microplastics up 32% since 2023, nearly 9 in 10 people concerned, and 81% in favor of requiring filters on new washing machines. The public isn't the obstacle. The real opponent is AHAM, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, the trade group representing the companies that build the machines.

AHAM's case rests on its own testing with NSF International, which found filters capture only about 25% of shed microfibers, a number it uses to argue the whole mandate is premature and expensive. Ocean Conservancy claims up to 90%. Andrew lays both numbers next to a stack of independent studies that fall outside either organization's own interest: an external filter capturing 87% on average, PlanetCare's claimed 98%, a Guppyfriend bag's 79-86%, and Connecticut's own government review putting existing filters at 80-89%.
