Shedd Aquarium beluga deaths: three whales are dead in eight days, and one of them had nothing to do with the rescue that was supposed to save them. Peekachu, a 23-year-old female recently transferred from the now-closed Marineland Canada, died on August 25. One week later, on September 2, two more belugas died on the same day: Rain, a 20-year-old female who had also just arrived from Marineland, and Beethoven, a 34-year-old male who had lived at Shedd for decades and was never part of the transfer at all. That last death is the one drawing the most scrutiny, because a rescued animal dying under stress is explainable. A healthy, long-term resident dying too is not.
Shedd took in 10 of the 30 belugas relocated this year after Marineland Canada, a shuttered Canadian marine park, said it could no longer care for them, arriving in three waves between late July and September 1. Dr. Lori Marino, a neuroscientist who has studied belugas for more than 35 years and is the founder and president of the Whale Sanctuary Project, called the three deaths "shocking and horrifying" and named one specific possibility for what might connect them: a pathogen that traveled with the new arrivals and spread through the tank. Shedd says necropsies, blood tests, and further exams are already underway on all three whales, describing the process as deliberately slow and methodical, and that some of the surviving transferred belugas are adjusting well while others have shown clinical concerns of their own.
Nothing is confirmed yet, and outside experts say it's too early to know whether the three deaths are even connected. But the questions this raises go beyond Shedd. Advocates point out that Marineland's own documented failures created the need for this rescue in the first place, and that a very similar transfer in 2021 to Mystic Aquarium also ended in early deaths. A rescue built to save 30 whales from a closing, criticized facility has now produced three deaths at one location in eight days. Whatever the necropsies eventually show, the real question isn't only what killed these three whales. It's whether the rest of Shedd's pod, and the belugas sent to the four other receiving facilities, are at risk too.
