36 New Feeding Behaviours For Whale Sharks have been documented for the first time, thanks to camera tags attached directly to the animals themselves. Researchers Christine Barry (Murdoch University, Australian Institute of Marine Science) and Luciana C. Ferreira (AIMS) led the study, tagging whale sharks at a gathering site near Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. Combined with a review of more than 100 existing scientific publications, the team built the most comprehensive catalog of whale shark behaviour ever assembled, published in the journal Marine Biology.

The footage overturns a long-standing assumption. Whale sharks were thought to feed mostly at the surface, but the cameras show them foraging throughout the entire water column, down to 70 meters deep at the study site. The behaviours range from low-effort gliding near the seafloor to active, energetic chasing of krill swarms near the surface, a pattern researchers compare to grazing the pantry before committing to a real meal.

We break down how the camera tags work (they detach on their own after 24 hours with no long-term harm to the sharks), why this kind of footage has been nearly impossible to capture until now, and what it means for whale shark conservation going forward. The team hopes to expand the camera approach to other whale shark gathering sites worldwide, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and Atlantic.
