Half a Million Home Batteries Changed Australia's Grid After Dark

Half a million home batteries changed Australia's grid after dark, and it took about 13 months. Australia launched its Cheaper Home Batteries Program in July 2025, cutting about 30% off the upfront cost of a home battery connected to solar. By August 17, 2026, more than 507,000 had been installed in homes, small businesses and community buildings. Each one stores midday sunshine from the roof and releases it at dinnertime, the evening hours that gas plants used to cover. Marine biologist Andrew Lewin explains why an ocean scientist cares about batteries: most of the extra heat trapped by burning fossil fuels ends up in the ocean, where it drives marine heatwaves, coral bleaching and rising seas.

The grid data shows how big the shift has been. Australia's Energy Market Operator (AEMO) reported that wholesale electricity prices fell 47% in the April to June 2026 quarter compared with a year earlier. Gas generation dropped to its lowest level for that quarter since 2003, and renewables supplied a record 42% of the grid's power. AEMO credits more renewable generation, big batteries discharging in the evening and home batteries supplying households after sunset. Andrew also looks at how plug-in balcony solar is spreading through US states, the UK and Europe, giving ordinary people more control over where their power comes from.

Then the episode turns to Canada. Hydro and nuclear give Canada a cleaner starting grid, and battery storage more than doubled in 2025, led by Ontario. Wind and solar still supply only about 9 to 10% of Canada's electricity, and the Pembina Institute says 44% of Alberta's renewable projects were cancelled between 2023 and 2025 after the province paused approvals. In Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia's first offshore wind auction raises real questions for fishers, whales, seabirds and seabed habitat. You'll leave knowing what Ontario's Home Renovation Savings rebate offers, what to ask your MP and MPP, and why offshore wind consultations need ocean voices. Join Andrew live on Ocean Decoded Live, Monday to Thursday at 5 PM Eastern, and go deeper with his podcasts, How to Protect the Ocean and Beyond Jaws.

Takeaways:

Australia's Cheaper Home Batteries Program launched in July 2025 and cuts about 30% off the upfront cost of a home battery connected to solar.

More than 507,000 batteries were installed by August 17, 2026, about 14 gigawatt-hours of storage, or roughly one in 20 to one in 25 Australian homes.

Solar has a timing problem: panels peak at midday, and households use the most power in the evening. Home batteries shift that noon sunshine to dinnertime.

AEMO reported wholesale electricity prices down 47% year on year in Q2 2026, gas generation at its lowest for that quarter since 2003, and a record 42% renewable share.

AEMO credits renewables, grid-scale batteries discharging in the evening and home batteries supplying households after sunset.

When the clean option is also the cheaper option, people adopt it fast.

Plug-in balcony solar is spreading: Utah legalized it in 2025, about a dozen US states have followed or are close, and the UK legalized it in August 2026.

Canada's grid starts relatively clean, with about 55% hydro and 13% nuclear in 2025, and battery storage more than doubled in 2025, led by Ontario.

Wind and solar still supply only about 9 to 10% of Canada's electricity, and Alberta's solar additions fell from more than 2,000 MW in 2022 to 137 MW in 2025.

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program offers up to $5,000 on rooftop solar and up to $5,000 on a home battery installed with new solar.

Nova Scotia's offshore wind plans need clear answers for fisheries, whales, seabirds and seabed habitat before turbines go in the water.

Ask your MP and MPP why Canada has no national home battery program, and show up to offshore wind consultations if you live in Nova Scotia.
